DISCOVER THE UNEXPECTED
IN JOURNALISM

The experience you gain as a National Newspaper Publishers Association Fellow is the start of a strong foundation for your journalism career. Our objective is to recruit, train and retain talented journalists. We identify and develop high-caliber multimedia professionals from a diverse pool of the country’s best reporters, copy editors, photographers, designers and graphic artists. Candidates should be college students with interest, experience or background in journalism or related fields. Those selected will have the opportunity to grow in one of the world’s best Black Press journalism organizations.

A select group of NNPA Publishers, Editors, and Media Spokesperson will screen and evaluate NNPA Fellows applications and video submissions and select finalists. Selection of the NNPA Fellow to Discover the Unexpected will consist of:

  • Journalism/Communications Major
  • Professor Recommendation
  • GPA
  • Technology/social media mavens

PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE TO ENSURE YOUR BEST CHANCE OF SUCCESS

If you are offered and accept a position, you will be assigned an adviser and have the opportunity to develop mentoring relationships with seasoned professionals throughout National Newspaper Publishers Association. Your adviser will be a manager with expertise in your area of interest and will be responsible for scheduling your job assignments and designing your formal development plan.

PROGRAM FEATURES
AND BENEFITS

The Fellowship is a one-month program focusing on multimedia journalism. The Fellowship program consists of one-month assignment at our top metro papers. Throughout the program, Fellows will receive formal training, mentoring and work experience alongside award-winning journalists. National Newspaper Publishers Association Fellows are part-time employees of National Newspaper Publishers Association and will be paid a stipend and have an opportunity to earn a scholarship.

What is Discover the Unexpected?
Howard University communication students are invited to Discover the Unexpected presented by Chevrolet Malibu in partnership with the National Newspaper Publishers Association. It’s a life-changing opportunity to work with industry professionals, share good news about the community and get the story in an all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. Each selected team will report from one of the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and Washington D.C.
Does Discover the Unexpected offer financial compensation or academic credit?
Participants will receive a stipend and a scholarship. However, students must provide their own housing accommodations. Students are also eligible to receive academic credit, depending on the requirements of Howard University.
Who is eligible to Discover the Unexpected?
Howard University undergraduate students in their sophomore, junior or senior year are eligible. Candidates can also include recent graduates pursuing a career in communication.
Journalism is not my major. Am I eligible?
Yes. Your degree can be in any subject, but preference is given to students with a journalism degree or some experience in journalism, such as work for a campus or professional media outlet. You must submit work samples with your application.
