Earn a $10,000 scholarship, a journalism fellowship and a road trip of a lifetime!

Chevrolet and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) are giving HBCU students an exciting opportunity to Discover the Unexpected (DTU) about themselves, our communities and everyday people making a real difference.

HBCU students with an interest in journalism who are up for a road trip driven by hands-on experience, exciting challenges and discovering inspirational stories in the African-American community are eligible to apply for a fellowship.

Using NNPA’s professional resources and the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox’s innovative technology, DTU Fellows will share stories that shatter perceptions, jump-start their journalism careers and encourage us all to Discover the Unexpected.

HOW FELLOWS ARE SELECTED

A select group of NNPA Publishers, Editors, and Media Spokesperson will screen and evaluate NNPA Fellowship applications and video submissions and select finalists.

The Discover the Unexpected application process includes:

Completed application
Resume with GPA
Reference from your college Professor or Advisor
Video submission
Technology/social media skills
Writing sample

Professional assistance to ensure your best chance of success

As a DTU Fellow, you will be working with NNPA professionals as well as a social media-savvy Road Trip Navigator. Together, they will provide mentorship and assistance to help you make the most of your journey.

PROGRAM FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Discover the Unexpected is an 8-week journalism journey focused on sharing inspirational stories from African American communities. Each DTU Fellow receives a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 stipend. Each team of DTU Fellows will travel to two cities to work with two different NNPA newspapers using the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox’s innovative technology provided for the use of their team. DTU Fellows will be rewarded with hands-on experience, networking with journalism professionals and delivering stories that make a difference.
