Massey<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">In a press conference and groundbreaking ceremony in the Adamsville community of southwest Atlanta on Monday, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms released the City of Atlanta\u2019s Housing Affordability Action Plan \u2013 the first ever such document to address the City\u2019s supply of housing in the City of Atlanta for a full spectrum of its residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">Flanked by a number of City housing officials\u2014including Jon Keen, the deputy chief operating officer for the City of Atlanta; Terri Lee, chief housing officer for the City of Atlanta; and Denise Cleveland-Leggett, the state regional administrator for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development\u2014the mayor was also joined by affordable housing developers Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership (ANDP) and Laurel Street Residential to break ground on Creekside at Adamsville Place, a new rental community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">The $27.6-million, 147-unit development will offer rental rates affordable to families with incomes at 30 percent, 60 percent, and 80 percent of area median income, the mayor shared.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">\u201cAffordability is the foundation of any livable and thriving community,\u201d Bottoms said, recalling that she grew up in nearby Collier Heights. \u201cCreating and preserving affordable housing is critical to the future of all those who call Atlanta home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">\u201cFor too many residents, their zip code determines their opportunities,\u201d she continued. \u201cThis action plan is a vision for a more equitable city where each Atlantan has access to quality, safe and affordable housing. In 2017, Atlanta was the third fastest- growing metropolitan region in the U.S.As our population grows, many of our long-term residents are experiencing challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">While Atlanta\u2019s economy has grown, not all Atlantans have equally benefited. For too many residents, wages have not kept up with rising rents, the plan explained.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">Between 2000 and 2017, Atlanta\u2019s median income increased by 48 percent, keeping pace with the 46 percent increase in Atlanta\u2019s median home value. But the median rent increased by over 70 percent during this time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">While more than 15 percent of Atlanta\u2019s households have an annual income of $150,000 or more in 2017, more than 27 percent of households earn less than $25,000 annually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">\u201c(Implementing the action plan) means providing housing opportunities for young adults and young families who are our future as well as existing residents who have fueled our growth,\u201d Bottoms said in prepared remarks. \u201cAnd it means enabling our seniors and legacy residents to stay in the city that they helped to build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">The 45-action Affordable Housing action plan aims to substantially increase the number of Atlanta residents who can afford their housing costs, according to Lee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">The Plan represents a collaborative and shared effort from multiple City agencies and a diverse group of nonprofits, philanthropic organizations, faith-based organizations, educational institutions, private companies, residents, and community members who came together under the banner of House ATL to develop recommendations that are critical to the future of housing in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">\u201cIf we talk about affordable housing and workforce housing it\u2019s also about allowing people to live in housing in dignity; it\u2019s not enough that (citizens) just afford to live in the city we need to make sure that they are living with dignity in the city,\u201d Bottoms said. \u201cPart of what we are making sure is that we are talking about affordable medium income that it is across the board, because you have workforce and affordable housing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">\u201cYou want to make sure that if it\u2019s someone making minimum-wage that they can afford to live in the city in the same way that someone may be making 40,000 a year can afford to live in the city,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #393839;\">The plan includes the metrics for which its success will be judged by as well identifies the eight agencies responsible for the implementation of each action item and initiative connected to the action plan, which includes Atlanta Housing, Atlanta BeltLine Inc., Department of City Planning, Department of Finance, Invest Atlanta, Atlanta Land Bank Authority, Mayor\u2019s Office and One Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 100 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks each year.<\/p><p>A trade association of more than 200 African American-owned community newspapers from around the country, the NNPA has consistently been the voice of the Black community for 77 years.<\/p><p>The organization has been an incubator for news that makes history and, as the largest and most influential Black-owned media resource in America, the NNPA delivers news, information and commentary to more than 20 million people each week.<\/p><p>For the DTU program, students form two teams of three Fellows each. Each team will have access to an all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer during their reporting assignments.<\/p><p>Launched in 2015 and now in its fourth year, the DTU program has awarded more than $330,000 in scholarships and stipends.<\/p><p>Initially, program participation was limited to students from Howard University, one of the nation\u2019s most prestigious HBCUs. However, based on the overwhelming response and success of the program, the online submission process was eventually expanded to include students from any of the nation\u2019s HBCUs in their sophomore through senior years with an interest in journalism, communications, mass media or visual arts.<\/p><p>\u201cOur partnership with the NNPA continues to provide a unique platform to connect with young and remarkable storytellers.\u201d said Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet Marketing.<\/p><p>\u201cFrom the inaugural launch at Howard University to the inclusion of all the HBCUs, it\u2019s Chevrolet\u2019s pleasure to partner with members of the African American community, ensuring a legacy is established for generations to come,\u201d Edwards said.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to meet this year\u2019s group of Fellows and immerse them in all things Chevrolet,\u201d he said.<\/p><p>The NNPA \u201cis excited to partner with Chevrolet for another year in support of young journalists to amplify community voices across our country,\u201d said NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F.
